One year ago, my beloved Gidget had to be put to sleep. She had been suffering from cancer and liver problems and there was nothing more they could do for her. She was 16 years old.
I’ve been looking through her pictures and remembering some of the good times we had. She was the queen of the house as she’d been the only pet we had, although I did have some fish for a while, and we also had some birds for a little while – but Gidget had been the one pet who was a member of our family and treated as such. Even mum, while she didn’t show a lot of loving attention towards Gidget like I did, I remember her telling me she had been at her Garden Club and they were selling raffle tickets for a little prize. The money would also be used towards the club itself. She sold most of the tickets except a few so she bought them herself. When they drew out the name of the winning entry they called out “Gidget” and mum went “Oh that’s my cat!” Gidget was rather indifferent to the prize (a pot plant) but she got cuddles just the same. She was a loveable cat but also independent. She and I had a good understanding of each other. She also ‘talked’ a lot to me. I’d get home from work and she’d meow to greet me, so I’d say hello and then ask her questions about her day to which she’d respond in her own way.
Its kind of hard to say much more. I still mourn her passing but I do have two little munchkins that keep me busy every day. Tidus and Tifa were never replacements for Gidget, they are considered additional family members. There are things that Gidget used to do that they both do too, and things she used to do that neither Tidus nor Tifa will do – but they have their own traits and quirks that I love just the same.
I still miss you Gidget. Thank you for being my cat for 16 wonderful years. I’m sure you’re keeping an eye on the two munchkins and the mischief they get up to. <3
