Websites

I’ve been meaning to post something about my websites here over the last few weeks so I figured I’d better do it now before the new year is upon us.

So about a month ago I would have had a number of sites still up and running. Animay, Pixelacious (part of ReBoot Mayhem), Tidus & Tifa, ReBoot Mayhem, Edge of Beyond and this site. I’ve been reluctant to get rid of any of these sites, particularly Animay and ReBoot Mayhem mainly because of the length of time they’ve been in operation. However, I had to really re-evaluate why I needed these sites to continue to be running. For your information, I had very little choice but to purchase my own server via my host in order to run these sites. This was mainly the fault of Animay as it is such a large site to run. The cost was $175USD per month which is fine if you have very few other bills to pay but it gets to become a real struggle to make ends meet with such a large chunk coming out of my pay per month (for your information the above can translate to anywhere between that exact amount up to $230AUD pending how the dollar is fairing). With such a large amount of money disappearing from my purse every month I started to wonder if it was really worth the money keeping all these sites up and running. Not only am I paying that amount but I’m also paying the yearly amount to keep the domain names, and these costs go up every couple of years too.

So the decision was made, I had to reduce my websites and drop to a smaller shared-hosting package in order to keep me from going under financially. The only thing was that I had to make the very tough decision of removing one or two of my longer-running websites. Obviously Animay had to go and that was for two reasons – No 1 reason was I had not updated Animay in over 3 years (or was it 4?) and was not likely to be able to update in the near future. I love the site and I wish I had the time to continue it but sadly it hasn’t been the case. My workday is long and tiring enough as it is and when I’m home on the weekend I kind of prefer to spend the time with family or unwinding by reading a book, watching a movie or playing my games rather than spending more time on the computer to build a website. No 2 reason was more obvious, this was the site that was stopping me from dropping down to a smaller hosting package due to its sheer size. So it was with a heavy heart that I removed the site. I almost removed ReBoot Mayhem as well, however the site is not so big and there was some recent news on the series so I figured I could keep it running a bit longer. Pixelacious was not updated for a lengthy period of time either so it was removed, and Tidus & Tifa was my own wee blog site dedicated to my cats, but again had not been updated for a long time so it too was let go.

I still have the domain name for Animay and I will keep that for a long time yet. When I get the chance, I’ll still an index page up so that anybody who used to visit the site will know that it was taken down and has not just disappeared from the net. Perhaps one day in the future I will re-instate this website and start over again. Anything is still possible.

As a side note, Edge of Beyond – the forums for ReBoot Mayhem – will continue to operate despite very little activity. I will be upgrading the forums in the near future so that it is a bit more stable.

I’ve been through more music devices than I can count, and I’ve always been happiest with the Apple line, especially now that the drives are all flash! Glad to hear you’re happy with your purchases. 😀
