Hay Fever = Cold

Written by Mayhem on . Posted in Anime, Bento, General Rubbish, Websites

I’m not sure how many people get Hay Fever and a cold at the same time but I happen to be one of them. Monday night I could feel the hay fever hitting me like a ton of bricks. I didn’t have any tablets on hand, unfortunately, and suffered the consequences the following day when it was a scorcher and the pollen count was apparently massively huge. However I also felt the affects of an oncoming cold, so if you’ve had a bad dose of hay fever, try upping that a few more notches and then you’ll know how I felt at the best of times! I ended up taking today off just to see if I could battle the cold before it takes hold of me. So far its… well its still there but I seem to be getting the upper hand… I think. I may have been stuck at home but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t doing anything! One of my 2008 calendars that I’d ordered from overseas arrived on Tuesday so with the day off today I decided to try and scan in the images. Talk about a pain in the ass!! Anime calendars are huge, in fact probably the bulk of the calendars from Japan are too big! Nevertheless they are awesome so I had to try and keep my patience while I began scanning the calendar pages. Luckily they have two months per page so usually there’s only 6 pages to scan plus the cover on top of that. I managed to get it all done though and am reasonably pleased with the end result. I don’t know what it is with scanners these days but why won’t they scan in straight? Maybe its just HP scanners since those are the only scanners I’ve ever had, but if you put the image against the edges of the scanner glass, you would think it should come out dead straight yes? No! They don’t! So all the images are slightly off kilter, but I wasn’t going to rotate them around, Photoshop does some weird things whenever I use the rotate option so I prefer to avoid if where possible. The images are still good, though, I thought that at least if you had the whole of each character scanned in, then it didn’t matter too much about borders and such that show its on a slight angle. On top of doing that, I uploaded 581 screencaps to the Screencaps gallery in Animay. All for one album! I did the screencaps for the movie “BLEACH: Memories of Nobody” which is a great film. I love the characters from BLEACH 🙂 I’ve still been making bento lunches each day I go to work, though last night I anticipated that I may not be going to work so I didn’t bother making one. Tomorrow I’ll be having some rice I had left over, and a couple of mini-pita sandwiches as well as a yoghurt and possibly some rice crackers. At least its only two more days left in the week so if I’m still feeling crook it won’t matter too much. Monday next week is a public holiday, the last one until Christmas, and I’ve already put in for Tuesday as a day off so I’ve got a long weekend to get over this cold – and get some work done on the sites!

Today On The Menu…

Well actually I have been making a bento box lunch every day apart from weekends but haven’t really taken photos of every one that I’ve made. I’m not turning this into a Bento/Food blog, but it is fun to do so why not post up pics of my bento lunches? They’re not as fancy as the Japanese ones, nor some of the US ones I’ve seen too but they’re okay and they give me ideas on what to have for lunch each day. On top of that, trying different things makes it more interesting too. Its a bit weird trying to get used to such a small lunch box, though I realise that you can add on with additional containers of stuff like snacks. I still bring other things along like a yoghurt or dried fruit in packets or even a muesli bar of sorts so its not like I completely stick to just whats in the box. Bento Lunch No 3This was a bento lunch from last week. In the container on the far left is a pasta salad. Its mainly just curly pasta that has been cooked with a bit of bacon and onion. I added some cheese on top which I melted a little when it came to lunch time. There’s also a little container you can see at the top right corner of the screen which is basically salad dressing (light of course). That gave it a little zing! The middle container is grape tomatoes, cucumber, and some beef and potato slices. Essentially its some left over beef mince mixed in with potato and crumbed then lightly fried. It looks a bit icky but it tastes pretty good :p And I also had a packet of semi-dried apricots. Bento Lunch no 5!This was a lunch I had a couple of days after the one above. Its fairly simple and not a lot to it really but it was still reasonably filling just for lunch. The left container is vegetable frittatas. We made one big one and then sliced it up. I could only fit three pieces in but that was okay. The frittatas were potato, egg, capsicums, onion, tomatoes and I think that was all. I heated them up a little at lunch time and I added a little bit of salt for extra flavour. The right container is a fruit salad that I made. At the bottom (you can’t see them) are orange slices. Then on top of them are kiwifruit, sliced strawberries and diced rockmelon. I also had a yoghurt at work which I poured half of it onto the fruit salad. Yummy! Bento Lunch no 7!As you can see, its a different bento box! It actually arrived today from Japan. I ordered a special deal which was this bento box, along with three little bottles, two wax cups and a packet of grass dividers. I also bought some shakers specifically for the furikake sprinkles to add to the rice whenever I make it. They’re pretty cute! So I thought that I’d use this bento for something different. Its way smaller but there’s more compartments as you can see. One thing that is noticeable is the lack of greenery. Not that I meant it on purpose, its just that this is payweek, so obviously we’re starting to scrape around the back of the cupboard and fridge for stuff to make up. Anyway this looks pretty interesting so we’ll see how it goes tomorrow. The far left container has tamagoyaki (rolled omelette). This one is way better than the first one I made and I think I felt more confident in making it. Its actually got some interesting mixture in that I’ve added in bacon pieces, garlic and some mixed herbs. I cut the ends off and ate those lol, they were tasty! The middle container is couscous. I wasn’t sure if you do eat it hot or cold, but apparently you can have it either so I cooked it up. Actually I didn’t cook it, I just poured hot water on it and ‘fluffed’ it with a fork lol. Its got a lot of dried herbs and spices and many vegies so it should taste good. The little bear bottle in the top of the dish contains some rice oil. I didn’t have any olive oil unfortunately but apparently this oil is pretty much just as good. In the last container on the right, its just plain chicken lol. We had a roast on Sunday and I used some of this chicken today and am using the last of it for lunch tomorrow. Its essentially to go with the couscous. So anyway that’s my bento so far. I will probably run out of ideas soon even though there are many recipes and ideas on the web. The problem for me is the lack of things that I like outweigh the things I like. Most of the things I don’t like are actually stuff that most people will eat and are the main ingredient for a Japanese or Asian dish. So I only have a small amount of asian cooking that I actually like lol. However, I’ve done various bits and pieces not just solely based on asian dishes and they’ve worked fine for me. So far…
